Shawnee
is a city in Johnson County in northeast Kansas. It is a western suburb of Kansas City, Missouri and has an estimated population of 59,000 residents. In 2008, Money Magazine ranked Shawnee the 39th "best place to live in the United States" when comparing cities with population between 50,000 and 300,000. Shawnee has a rich fur trading and pioneering heritage, and is home to the Johnson County Museum. The museum includes a rotating exhibit gallery, gift shop, research library and education center. Other attractions in Shawnee include the Childrens Museum of Kansas City, which offers fun, inter-disciplinary arts and sciences exhibits and programs for children ages ten and under. The city of Shawnee is also host to several special events throughout the year, including Old Shawnee Days in June and an annual Arts & Crafts Fair in September. Shawnee Mission Park is a 1,250-acre multi-use park located at 79th and Renner Road. It is the largest park in Johnson County and the most visited park in the state of Kansas. The park includes a 120-acre lake that is popular for fishing and boating, sail boarding and canoeing and other water sports. Nature trails, playground areas, an archery range, a marina and a 51-acre off-leash dog park are also located within Shawnee Mission Park.

The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
