Leawood
is a mid-sized city located in Johnson County in northeast Kansas and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the population was 27,656 residents. Leawood was incorporated in 1948 and is known for its beautiful parks, lovely residential neighborhoods and excellent schools. In fact, the whole area of Johnson County retains a very high quality of life. In 2008, CNN/Money and Money Magazine ranked three cities in Johnson County on its list of the "100 Best Cities to Live in the United States," Overland Park, Olathe and Shawnee. Attractions near the city of Leawood include the Ensor Farmsite and Museum, Gardner Historical Museum, Johnson County Museums, the Legler Barn Museum and Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm. The Johnson County Museums is actually three separate museums: the 1950s All-Electric House, the Lanesfield School Historic Site and the Museum of History. The Johnson County Museum of History opened in 1967 in the former Greenwood School. The museum has continued to achieve its mission of preserving and sharing the communitys history through its award winning permanent and changing exhibits. It includes permanent and changing galleries, a research library, an education center and a museum store. The city of Leawood is just a short drive to Kansas Citys many attractions, restaurants, shopping and special events.

The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
