Olathe
is the fifth most populous city in Kansas, located in Johnson County in the northeastern part of the state. The estimated population in 2007 was 118,034 residents. Olathe is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri and known as the birthplace of the original cowboy boot. In 2008, the US Census Bureau ranked Olathe as the 24th fastest growing city in the nation. That same year, CNN/Money and Money Magazine ranked Olathe 11th on the list of the "100 Best Cities to Live in the United States." Olathe has rich historical attractions, dynamic shopping and cultural events, fine restaurants and top-notch accommodations. In addition, there are acres of parkland and grasslands for outdoor recreational opportunities. Attractions include the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm, which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and the last remaining stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail open to the public. The Ernie Miller Nature Center and Park contains 113 acres of tall grass prairie, upland meadows, woodlands and streams, an education center and outdoor amphitheater. Three paved hiking trails are available in the nature center. Heritage Park in Olathe offers golf, an off-leash area for dogs, playgrounds, picnicking areas, a marina and fishing lake, paths for jogging and more. The rich natural history of Kansas has been preserved in Olathes Prairie Center, with 300 acres of native tall grasses, woodlands and creeks, plus a five-acre fishing lake and six miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.

The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
