Kansas-City
is the third largest city in Kansas and is located in the northeast portion of the state. It sits at Kaw Point, which is the junction of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. As of the 2000 census, the population of Kansas City was 146,867 residents. The city is part of the Unified Government, which also includes the cities of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville. Kansas City, nicknamed "KCK" is also called "The Heart of America," because its within 250 miles of both the geographic and population centers of the United States. Recently, Kansas City was named one of only five "destinations to watch in 2009" by SmarterTravel.com, in part due to its new nine-block Power & Light District. This is downtown Kansas Citys newest neighborhood that is filled with restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. There is also an outdoor stage featuring live entertainment on more than 150 days per year. Other Kansas City attractions include the Crossroads Arts District, which is one of the largest art walks in the nation, the well-known Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City Zoo. The city of Kansas City also has a variety of fine architectural buildings and various historical points of interest. The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
