Lenexa
is located in northeastern Kansas in the central part of Johnson County. The population is approximately 43,434 residents. Lenexa is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is bordered by the cities of Shawnee to the north, Overland Park to the east, De Soto to the west and Olathe to the south. Historically, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, staked a claim on 160 acres at what is now the corner of 83rd and Clare Road in Lenexa. He worked as a stocktender at the nearby Reed Hotel and later was elected constable of Montecello Township. A park in his name is now in the area. Lenexa is host to several special events throughout the year. Community Days are celebrated each year around the Fourth of July and features a pancake breakfast, parade through Old Town Lenexa, a pet show and fireworks. In addition, a 10K Freedom Run is one of the oldest and most popular races in the area and prizes are awarded to winners in several categories. Lenexa is known as "The Spinach Capital of the World," and each year the city hosts a Spinach Fest that features the worlds largest spinach salad. Other festivals include an annual Waterfest each August. This is a free event where residents join together to celebrate water with numerous interactive, educational displays, as well as lots of water related activities, such as paddle boats, waterslides, canoeing, cane-pole fishing and more. A Chili Challenge is held in October each year in Old Town Lenexa.

The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
