Leavenworth
is the largest city in Leavenworth County, situated in the rolling hills of northeast Kansas. It sits along the west bank of the Missouri River. As of the 2000 census, the population of Leavenworth was 35,420 residents. Founded in 1854, Leavenworth was the first incorporated city in the state of Kansas. The city is located south of Fort Leavenworth, which is the the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi River. Leavenworth is the site of many detention centers and prisons, including the Leavenworth federal prison which the city is most famous for, and several smaller jails and prisons. Its also home to the University of Saint Mary, operated by the Sisters of Charity. Leavenworth has a Historic Riverfront Downtown that offers shopping, restaurants and hotels in a friendly, hometown atmosphere. Other attractions include the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, the Carroll Mansion and the Richard Allen Cultural Center. Historically, Leavenworth served as a springboard for the settlement of the West. The town was built largely to support the Fort, which was founded in 1827, and for settlers heading further west. As the city grew, factories and businesses flourished and stately homes were built and Leavenworth became the industrial center of Kansas. The city has a historic walking and driving tour commemorating the notable events and locations in the community.

The Northeast Corner of Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
