Valley-Falls
is a charming town located in the rolling hills of Jefferson County in northeast Kansas. It lies along the Delaware River. The population was 1,254 as of the 2000 census and it is part of the Topeka metropolitan area. Originally called Grasshopper Falls, the town was platted in 1855 and incorporated in 1869. However, the grasshopper invasion of the 1870s was devastating and not a good promotional aid for a new and aspiring town, so the name was changed to Valley Falls. Isaac Cody, father of the famous Buffalo Bill Cody, built a saw mill at Valley Falls. Wild Bill Hickok was noted in the local press as having danced with the ladies on one of his visits through town. Today, Valley Falls is a Tree City USA and boosts two beautiful parks. One block of town, Grasshopper Grove, is a horticultural marvel with a wide variety of trees and flowering bushes. Memorial Tree Park is planted with cypress and features a gazebo, tennis court, and playground equipment. Riverside Park has electrical hookups for campers and is close to a boat dock on the river. A swimming pool is open afternoons and early evenings during the summer months. Downtown Valley Falls offers a historical museum and several shops housed in late19th-century buildings. The town hosts its annual Grasshopper Falls Days in April and the Jefferson County 4-H Fair in August. Nearby Perry Lake offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping and hunting.

Northeast Kansas has a humid continental climate with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 20-28 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. The state of Kansas receives over 50 tornadoes per year. Snowfall is generally light, with a snow depth of at least an inch occurring an average of 26 days per year.
