Holton
is located in Jackson County in the Topeka, Kansas metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,353 residents. Situated in northeast Kansas among rolling hills, picturesque farms and wooded areas, Holton is about 28 miles north of Topeka. Holton is also the county seat of Jackson County, and the courthouse sits at the center of a vintage downtown square in the business district. Called a "classic Midwestern community," Holton has lovely homes typical of the early 20th century with large front porches and hand-carved trim, while the towns streets are lined with stately old trees. The city of Holton hosts an annual July Jubilee the first Saturday in July. This fun family event includes games and rides, a parade, a trail run, swimming, boating, fishing, live music, food vendors, a lighted boat parade and fireworks after dark. Attractions in nearby Topeka include the historic state capitol, Doran Rock Garden, Topeka Zoo, the Kansas Museum of History and the Combat Air Museum. Topeka is also home to Old Prairie Town at the Ward-Meade Historic Site on the Oregon Trail, which includes a botanical garden and a 5-5-acre pioneer village.

Northeast Kansas has a humid continental climate with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 20-28 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. The state of Kansas receives over 50 tornadoes per year. Snowfall is generally light, with a snow depth of at least an inch occurring an average of 26 days per year.
