Topeka
is the capital city of Kansas and is located in the northeast portion of the state, along the Kansas River. As of the 2000 census, the population was 122,377 residents. In the 1840s, wagon trains made their way from Independence, Missouri west on what would come to be known as the Oregon Trail. About 60 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri, three Kansas Indian sisters, married to three French-Canadian brothers, established a ferry service allowing travelers to cross the Kansas River at what is now Topeka. Today, the city is the cultural and economic center of the region. Attractions include the Kansas State Capitol, where visitors can view the chambers of the Senate and House of Representatives, learn the story of the John Steuart Curry murals, and see the beautiful marble and glass panels of the dramatic Capitol dome. If you are feeling up to it, you can take a 296-step tour of the Capitol Dome. Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site is located on the Oregon Trail and includes a 5.5 acre pioneer village that features a botanical garden and an 1870s prairie mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other Topeka gardens include the Ted Ensley Gardens at Shawnee Lake, the Doran Rock Garden with its 12,000 tulips and daffodils and 80-year old rock garden, and the Matrot Castle and Vineyard. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is an interactive, experiential museum that celebrates the decision of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision that desegregated public schools. Other Topeka attractions include the Kansas Museum of History, the Combat Air Museum and the Topeka Zoo.

Eastern Kansas has cold winters and warm summers. Cold air from the north moves across flat plains, moderating as it travels southward. Hot winds from the south give the state very warm summers. Kansas has broad variations in precipitation, with the amount steadily decreasing from east to west. The eastern portion of the state averages 20 to 28 inches of precipitation per year. The area is prone to thunderstorms, especially in the springtime. Many of these storms become Supercell thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes, often of F3 strength or higher. Kansas has reported more tornadoes than any state except for Texas, with an average of 50 tornadoes annually.
