Burlingame
is a small town located in Osage County in northeast Kansas. It is part of the Topeka metropolitan area and as of the 2000 census, Burlingame had a population of 1,017 residents. Burlingame was originally established as an important stop along the Santa Fe Trail. The first post office opened on April 30, 1855 and the town was named Council City, but changed to Burlingame in 1858. The wide brick main street in town, Santa Fe Avenue, was built wide enough for an oxen team to be able to make a u-turn. Today, Burlingame is a lovely, quiet little town, yet close to metropolitan areas that offer lots of entertainment and recreational opportunities. Attractions in Burlingame include the Schuyler Museum, which is housed in the old Schuyler Grade School, built in 1902. The museum features seven rooms of exhibits that reflect Burlingames history, including a 1938 fire truck. Nearby Topeka has many other attractions such as the Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site, which includes a 5.5 acre pioneer village with a botanical garden and an 1870s prairie mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other places of interest near Burlingame include the Ted Ensley Gardens at Shawnee Lake, the Doran Rock Garden, Matrot Castle and Vineyard, Kansas Museum of History, the Combat Air Museum and the Topeka Zoo.

Eastern Kansas has cold winters and warm summers. Cold air from the north moves across flat plains, moderating as it travels southward. Hot winds from the south give the state very warm summers. Kansas has broad variations in precipitation, with the amount steadily decreasing from east to west. The eastern portion of the state averages 20 to 28 inches of precipitation per year. The area is prone to thunderstorms, especially in the springtime. Many of these storms become Supercell thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes, often of F3 strength or higher. Kansas has reported more tornadoes than any state except for Texas, with an average of 50 tornadoes annually.
