Council-Grove is located in east-central Kansas, in Morris County. It serves as the county seat and has a population of approximately 2.300 residents. It was named after an agreement between European Americans and the Osage Indian tribe that allowed settlers wagon trains to pass through the area and proceed to the West. Pioneers gathered at a grove of trees so that wagons could band together for their trip west. This area, which is now Council Grove, was one of the last stops on the Santa Fe Trail heading southwest. The town was incorporated in 1858. American settler, Seth Hays, who was a grandson of Daniel Boone, opened a restaurant in 1857, the Hays House, which is said to be the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi River. Council Grove has 13 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A Council Grove Historic Tour brochure takes you on a self-guided tour of 24 historic sites. Guided tours available for groups of ten or more. You can pick up a copy at the Council Grove/Morris County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism office at 207 W Main Street. Brochures are also available at several businesses and historic sites in the city. Both the Council Grove Reservoir and the City Lake are popular for recreational activities. While both lakes are open to the public and motorized boats, most of the land around the City Lake is privately owned with around one hundred lake houses. Both lakes offer excellent fishing for walleye, crappie, white bass, and many other species.

The temperature falls below the freezing point an average of 188 days per year. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. The area receives 35 inches of precipitation per year, with the most in May and June. Snow depth of at least one inch occurs an average of 20 days per year. Severe weather is possible, in the form of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Thunderstorms may produce large hail and lightening.
