Junction-City
is located in northeast Kansas between the Smoky Hill and Republican Rivers where they merge to form the Kansas River. The population at the 2000 census was 18,886 residents. In 1853, Fort Riley, a major United States Army post was established near Junction City. The area offers a lot of attractions and outdoor recreation, from golf, boating and fishing, hiking or picnicking in one of the citys lovely parks. Junction City is also home to Sundown Salute, the largest free Independence Day celebration in the state of Kansas. Just three miles from Junction City is Milford Lake, the largest lake in Kansas, known as "The Fishing Capital of Kansas." Other nearby attractions include Geary State Fishing Lake, the Kansas Arboretum, which offers 193 wooded acres with more than 1,000 species of trees and shrubs, and Konza Prairie, where seven miles of hiking trails are available to the public. Horseback riding and hay rides, carriage rides and home-made cooking are all part of the argi-tourism of Geary County and Junction City. Two excellent golf courses are also in the area. History buffs will also find Junction City a place of great interest. The Spring Valley Heritage Site contains a 19th century one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, historic church and barn. Starcke House is an 1885 period house museum with antique furnishings and accessories. Other historic sites attractions include Custer House, the U.S. Cavalry Museum and the Geary County Historical Museum.

Northern Kansas has a humid, continental climate. Winter blizzards, violent windstorms, and heavy rains are common throughout the state, and the continental climate (on occasion) produces rapid temperature extremes. Generally the summers are quite warm, the winters are mild, and the humidity is on the moderate side. January is the coldest month, with average high temperatures near 31 degrees. July is the warmest month, with average high temperatures near 81 degrees. Much hotter summers and harsh, cold winters are not uncommon. Annual precipitation amounts range from 30 - 40 inches in the east, while drier conditions are common in the west.
