Wichita
is the most populous city in Kansas with an estimated 361,420 residents. It is located in Sedgwick County in the south-central part of the state along the Arkansas River. In July2006, CNN/Money Magazine ranked Wichita 9th on its list of the "10 Best U.S. Cities in Which to Live." In 2008, MSN Real Estate ranked Wichita 1st on its list of "Best Affordable Cities." Several universities are located in the city, the largest being Wichita State University. Wichita is a cultural and entertainment center where approximately four million people visit each year. The city has more than 1,000 restaurants and shopping choices that range from open-air shopping centers, eclectic shops and antique stores. Wichita is scattered with small art galleries clustered in the districts of Old Town, Delano and south Commerce streets. These galleries host the Final Friday Gallery Crawl Event, which offers tours, for free, in the evening on the last Friday of each month. The Wichita Art Museum is the largest museum in the state of Kansas and contains 7,000 works in permanent collections. Other museums in the city include Mid-America All-Indian Center, Old Cowtown, Botanica, The Wichita Gardens and Exploration Place, which is a science and discovery center. Just east of downtown, Old Town Wichita has been transformed from an old warehouse district to a mixed-zone neighborhood of residential space, nightclubs, restaurants, hotels and museums, including the Great Plains Transportation Museum and Museum of World Treasures. Other Wichita attractions include the Sedgwick County Zoo, the Orpheum Theater, built in 1922, and the Wichita River Festival, held each May in the Downtown and Old Town areas of the city.

Southeast Kansas has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The southeast region has more precipitation than any other area of the state. The state of Kansas lies across the path of alternate masses of warm moist air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico and currents of cold, comparatively dry, air moving from the polar regions. Consequently, the weather is subject to frequent and often sharp changes, usually of short duration. The overall annual precipitation for the area averages 27 inches, although years of drought have not been uncommon. The annual snowfall is less than 11 inches in the far southeast. Tornadoes are a fact of life in the state of Kansas, with an average of 50 per year.
