Saint-Paul
is a small, historic town located in Neosho County in southeastern Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the population was 646 residents. Called "The Little Town With the Big Church," St. Paul is home to the Osage mission and school. Unlike most towns, where churches are established after the towns are founded, the Osage church and school were here first and drew large numbers of early settlers to the area. The city of St. Paul was called Osage Mission in the early days and was the largest town in Neosho County and the surrounding area. Many of these early settlers still have descendants living on or near their old homesteads. Father John Schoemakers, S.J. Founded Osage Mission in 1847. Called the "Apostle to the Osage," and "Father of Civilization in Southeast Kansas," he served for 36 years as spiritual director, doctor, steward, lawyer, judge, catechist and preacher to the Osage. Father Schoemakers is buried in St. Frances Cemetery, one quarter mile east of the church. The Osage Mission Infirmary & Guest House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now the St. Anns Bed and Breakfast. St. Paul celebrates Mission Days annually on Memorial Day weekend with a parade, races, musical entertainment, pony & draft horse pulls, a carnival, kids games, a golf tournament and Memorial Day serves at the local cemeteries.

Southeast Kansas has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The southeast region has more precipitation than any other area of the state. The state of Kansas lies across the path of alternate masses of warm moist air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico and currents of cold, comparatively dry, air moving from the polar regions. Consequently, the weather is subject to frequent and often sharp changes, usually of short duration. The overall annual precipitation for the area averages 27 inches, although years of drought have not been uncommon. The annual snowfall is less than 11 inches in the far southeast. Tornadoes are a fact of life in the state of Kansas, with an average of 50 per year.
