The town was founded in 1869 and named for General Alfred Pleasanton. The town of Pleasanton is a lovely community for those who enjoy small town living. There are several lake communities in the area, including Linn Valley Lakes and Lake Chaparral, which provide a quick getaway for those in nearby Kansas City to spend weekends or holidays. Of those, Lake Chaparral offers three private lakes. Pleasanton is also near the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge. This 7,500-acre refuge was established in 1992 to protect one of the northwestern-most examples of bottomland hardwood forest in the United States, along with the largest contiguous tract of bottomland hardwood forest in Kansas. This unique area harbors many nationally and regionally threatened species, such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, cerulean warblers, broadhead skinks, and flat floater mussels. In addition, more than 30 species of warblers migrate through or nest in the refuge. Other interesting species in the area include river otters, bobcats, paddlefish, crawfish and scissor-tailed flycatchers.
