Kanopolis is a small town of approximately 550 located in Ellsworth County in central Kansas. The town is built on the site of Fort Harker, a United States Army base that housed infantry and cavalry troops in the Indian Wars from 1867 to 1872. After Fort Harker closed, the new town was given the name of Kanopolis because it was envisioned as the Central Metropolis of the state and was suppose to become its capital. However, eventually most of the population migrated to the nearby town of Ellsworth. Even though the town didnt reach the population that early city planners had hoped for, the town survived and prospered through the years. Kanopolis is host to the annual Fort Harker Days in July and the St. Ignatius Fiesta over Labor Day weekend. The Fort Harker Museum Complex is also located in Kanopolis. Besides the native stone guardhouse there remains three other fort buildings: the Jr. Officers quarters and the Commanding Officers quarters, which are maintained by the historical society and open to the public. The third building, another Jr. Officers quarters, is a private residence. All Fort Harker buildings were built in 1867.

Kanopolis Weather & Climate

Central Kansas has a humid continental climate. Over the course of a year, temperatures range from an average low of 15 degrees F. in January to an average high of nearly 93 degrees F. in July. The temperature falls below the freezing point an average of 188 days per year. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. The area receives 35 inches of precipitation per year, with the most in May and June. Snow depth of at least one inch occurs an average of 20 days per year. Severe weather is possible, in the form of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Thunderstorms may produce large hail and lightening.
