Dodge-City
is located in Ford County in southwest Kansas and has a population of about 30,000 residents. The town is well known to generations of Americans, due to the long-running radio and television series, Gunsmoke, which was set in Dodge City. Today, the city is home to one of the largest beef processing plants in the USBL, and is sometimes called the "meat packing capital of the United States." The Santa Fe Trail Remains, located nine miles west of Dodge City on U.S. 50, is a two-mile section of the former 1,200-mile long Santa Fe Trail that is the longest continuous stretch of clearly defined Santa Fe Trail rut remains in Kansas. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1963. Dodge City was once called "the wickedest little city in the west." The town was widely known for its reputation of lawlessness and gun-slinging, as there was no local law enforcement and the military had no jurisdiction over the town. Fighting and shootings where men died with their boots on led to a need for hasty burials in what became known as Boot Hill Cemetery. The cemetery, which was used until 1878, is now a part of the Dodge City Boot Hill Museum. This western history village offers a chuck-wagon dinner, gunfight re-enactments, a variety show, stagecoach rides through downtown Dodge City, history displays and other entertainment. There is also a casino and resort planned to open in 2009. Other Dodge City attractions include Dodge City Raceway Park, Dodge City Zoo and the Gunfighters Wax Museum. A Farmers Market is held in downtown Dodge City every Saturday morning from the first Saturday in June through the first frost of autumn.
