Baxter-Springs is a small city located in the southeast corner of Kansas along the Spring River. It is part of Cherokee County and has an estimated population of 4,221 residents. In the 19th century, Baxter Springs developed as one of the first "cow towns" in Kansas, where thousands of head of cattle were driven to market. Baxter Springs is the south-west end of the section of U.S. Route 66 that passes through Kansas. Around 1868 there was a great demand for beef in the North, and Texas cattlemen and stock raisers drove large herds of cattle from the southern planes. Baxter Springs was used as a way point to the northern markets. The town organized a Stockyards and Drovers Association to buy and sell cattle, and constructed corrals for up to 20,000 head of cattle, supplied with ample grazing lands and fresh water. Texas cattle trade stimulated the economy and Baxter Springs grew rapidly. Attractions in Baxter Springs include the Little League Baseball Museum, the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum, the Heritage Museum Log Cabin and Bilkes Western Museum. The town is also rich in Civil War History and is known for being home to the Rainbow Curve Bridge, the only remaining Marsh Arch bridge on Route 66.

Baxter Springs Weather & Climate

The Southeast Corner of Kansas ,near the Oklahoma border, has a highly changeable, subtropical climate. The overall annual precipitation for the area averages 27 inches, although years of drought have not been uncommon. About 70 percent of the precipitation falls between April and the end of September. The annual snowfall ranges from about 36 inches in the extreme northwest to less than 11 inches in the far southeast. Tornadoes are a fact of life in the state of Kansas. Generally, the summers are quite warm and humidity is on the moderate side. January is the coldest month of the year. The continental climate can, on occasion, produce rapid temperature extremes.
