Arkansas-City
is located in southeastern Kansas at the confluence of the Arkansas and Walnut Rivers. As of the 2000 census, the population was 11,963 residents. It is the second most populous city in Cowley County. The name of the city is not pronounced like the nearby state of Arkansas, but rather with the final "s" pronounced. Due to many different pronunciations of the city, and for the sake of brevity, Arkansas City is most often referred to as simply "Ark City." There are several attractions in Arkansas City, including a number of sculptures scattered throughout the town, many of them by local artists. The Chaplin Nature Center is located five miles northwest of Arkansas City. It consists of 230 acres of woodlands, prairies and streams, and over five miles of walking trails that are open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. There is also a 3,300 square foot visitors center, a nature library, bookstore and gift shop and multi-purpose room at the Chaplin Nature Center. Other attractions near Arkansas City include the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum, the La Hacienda Buffalo Ranch and the Horizon Center, which is a camp and retreat center, situated on 160 acres of wooded trails in the rolling hills of south-central Arkansas.

South-central Kansas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Temperatures range from an average of low of about 20 degrees in January to an average high of nearly 93 degrees in July. The first fall freeze typically occurs between the second week of October and mid-November, and the last spring freeze occurs between the end of March and the final week of April. The area receives over 30 inches of precipitation in an average year, with the most occurring in May and June. Winter snowfall averages almost 17 inches but the median is less than 8 inches per year. The area is vulnerable to severe weather, with frequent thunderstorms in spring and summer. Tornadoes are also a possibility in south-central Kansas.
